I think that you should follow the next tips to do image optimization:
- Alt tags (it is the text that the search engine uses to understand images);
- file size ( make the image file size as small as possible, without sacrificing quality);
- file name (pick a descriptive filename - preferably a file name you want that image to rank for - because it  will help with your search engine rankings);
-  captions (image captions are important because they are one of the most well-read pieces of content on oyur entire site).

First make sure you have unique image that should not available in the world.
Purchased image will work also fine.
Don't use royal free images for image marketing.
Don't use normal or generic images for latest posts.

Image relevancy is important when it comes to image optimization for SEO. An image of a train on a page related. I know it's common sense, but this step is so important that I just can't miss it out.

Image optimization is the basic steps for your SEO campaign. One of the basic tips for image linking is to avoid linking your images directly. Always use relevant anchor texts whenever linking your images. This is even more effective for your SEO when embedding images in a guest post or other pages intended to get a link back to your site.

I think it has possible been covered already but here are my tips.

1. Image size is critical. Don't make your site slugish with heavy file sizes. There is a good chrome plug in that helps you identifiy the correct size.
2. Make sure you have the right to use the image.
3. Good quality descriptions in the images before you upload and changing the image description after upload can add unecessary code.
4. Alt tags: If the image can't load for whatever reason will the viewer still get an idea of what the image is about?

Kept that in mind and you won't go far wrong.

Due to how our eyes work, images are great candidates for loss compression. Image optimization is a function of loss and lossless compression. Differences in image formats are due to the difference in how and which loss and lossless algorithms are used to optimize the image.

Use modern formats like WebP or AVIF to ditch bloated JPEGs and PNGs. Leverage lazy loading to defer offscreen assets, and compress images with tools like TinyPNG or ImageOptim without killing quality.
Responsive images with srcset ensure you serve the right resolution for every viewport, cutting bandwidth waste and boosting load times.
