Does cataloguing still make sense?

I know that until a few years ago, adding entries to various directories allowed a website to be positioned effectively to a certain extent. However, does the link we obtain still have any power? Or have directories merely become a database of companies to which we can add ourselves.

Once you print a catalogue, you can't go back and correct any typos, tweak that wonky logo or update information. You need to make sure everything is perfect before you send it to the printers.
