The largest source of irrelevant traffic is known as Referrer Spam, and is driven by spammers who crawl the web without blocking themselves from analytics. In the process of affecting your analytics, these spammers hope to profit via increased search engine rankings or increased traffic to a specific web page.

Spammers send bots to drive traffic to other sites in an effort to drive traffic back to their own website. They are counting on people seeing skewed numbers in Google Analytics, finding the source of the spam that is causing it, then clicking on the link to see their website.
