Title: Page Hijacking
Post by: seosolutions84 on 08-16-2012, 23:57:42
Page hijacking is achieved by creating a rogue copy of a popular website which shows contents similar to the original to a web crawler but redirects web surfers to unrelated or malicious websites.

It is achieved by creating a copy of popular website. By this web crawler couldn't analyse that as a copied web site. And when visitors search for the popular web site it automatically redirects to some other page. By this high ranking is achieved for certain keyword. It is similar to cloaking technique. If two pages have the same content, only one of the URLs will be kept. A spammer will try to ensure that the copied website is the one shown on the result pages.

According to Wikipedia

An important part of Google's algorithm is duplicate content. If multiple pages on the web have the same content, only the one that Google believes is the original/authority remains. This is a technique to fool Google into thinking that the wrong one is the original, therefore deindexing the real deal.

It's not easy to fool google. People should not go for page hijacking. It is a black hat seo technique for google algorithms so avoid it. Stick to white hat seo which gives you higher ranking.

 information on page hijacking:

- **Intent**: Page hijacking is typically done with malicious intent. It's often used to trick users into visiting websites that may contain malware, phishing scams, or other harmful content.

- **Search Engine Impact**: Page hijacking can also impact search engine rankings. When search engines index the rogue copy of the website, it can lead to duplicate content issues and potentially harm the original website's ranking.

- **Techniques**: Perpetrators of page hijacking use various techniques to achieve it, including copying the content of the target website, setting up redirects, and employing cloaking methods to show different content to web crawlers and human visitors.

- **Mitigation**: Website owners can mitigate page hijacking by regularly monitoring their site for unauthorized copies, using security measures like SSL/TLS, and reporting instances of hijacking to search engines.

- **Legal Consequences**: Page hijacking is illegal and can lead to legal consequences for those responsible. It's considered a form of online fraud and copyright infringement.

- **Duplication of Content**: Page hijackers often copy the entire content of a legitimate website, including text, images, and code. This duplicated content is then used on their rogue website.

- **Cloaking**: To deceive search engines, page hijackers may use cloaking techniques. This involves showing one set of content to search engine crawlers (usually the copied content from the legitimate site) and a different set of content to regular users (usually the malicious or unrelated content).

- **Impact on Users**: When unsuspecting users visit the rogue website, they are often redirected to unrelated or malicious sites. This can lead to various negative consequences, such as exposing users to scams, malware, or unwanted advertisements.

- **SEO Consequences**: Page hijacking can harm the search engine optimization (SEO) efforts of the legitimate website. Search engines may penalize the original site for duplicate content or for hosting malicious redirects.

- **Prevention**: Website owners can take preventive measures by regularly monitoring their site's content for unauthorized duplicates, implementing strong security measures, and using tools like Google's Search Console to detect unusual changes in their site's performance.

- **Reporting**: If a website owner suspects page hijacking, they should report it to search engines like Google, which can take action to remove the rogue site from search results.

- **Phishing Attacks**: Page hijacking can be used as part of phishing attacks. When users are redirected to malicious websites, they may be prompted to enter sensitive information like login credentials or credit card details, which can then be stolen by attackers.

- **Malware Distribution**: Rogue websites in page hijacking schemes often host malware or distribute it to visitors. This can result in the infection of users' devices, leading to data loss, identity theft, or other cybersecurity issues.

- **SEO Spam**: In some cases, page hijackers use the copied content to promote their own products or services through SEO spam. They may inject keywords and links to manipulate search engine rankings, which can further harm the legitimate website's SEO.

- **Detection Challenges**: Detecting page hijacking can be challenging, as the rogue websites are designed to mimic the original closely. Webmasters often need to use specialized tools and techniques to identify these fraudulent copies.

- **Legitimate Site Reputation**: Page hijacking can damage the reputation of the legitimate website, as users may associate it with the malicious or unrelated content they were redirected to, even though the legitimate site is not responsible for the hijacking.

- **Legal Action**: In addition to reporting page hijacking to search engines, website owners may pursue legal action against the perpetrators to protect their intellectual property and brand.

- **Evolution**: Page hijacking techniques continue to evolve as cybercriminals find new ways to deceive both search engines and users. This may involve using advanced cloaking methods, constantly changing URLs, or exploiting vulnerabilities in website platforms.

- **Defacement vs. Full Duplication**: Page hijacking can range from simple defacement of a website to full duplication. In some cases, attackers may replace the content on the legitimate site with their own message or deface it, while in other cases, they create a near-identical duplicate with malicious intent.

- **Backlinks**: Page hijackers often seek to benefit from the backlinks (links from other websites to the legitimate site) that the original website has accumulated over time. This can boost the search engine ranking of the rogue site and make it appear more legitimate to search engines.

- **Impact on Trust**: Page hijacking erodes trust in the affected website. Users who experience such redirects may become wary of visiting the legitimate site in the future, fearing they might encounter more malicious content.

- **Responsibility**: Website owners are not responsible for page hijacking, but they are often the ones who suffer the consequences, including reputational damage. Taking prompt action to address the issue and report it to search engines is crucial.

- **User Education**: Educating users about the risks of page hijacking, phishing, and malware is essential. Users should be cautious when clicking on links and be aware of the signs of suspicious websites.

- **Cloaking Techniques**: Page hijackers often employ sophisticated cloaking techniques to present different content to search engine crawlers and regular users. This allows them to deceive search engines while redirecting human visitors to malicious sites.

- **Black Hat SEO**: Page hijacking is considered a black hat SEO technique, exploiting the ranking algorithms of search engines. By redirecting users to unrelated or malicious websites, hijackers attempt to boost the visibility of these sites on search engine results pages.

- **Pharming**: Page hijacking can also be a part of pharming attacks, where users are redirected to a fraudulent website even if they enter the correct website address. This is achieved by manipulating DNS records.

- **Social Engineering**: Page hijacking often involves some level of social engineering, tricking users into believing they are on a legitimate website. This can involve mimicking the design, branding, and layout of the original site.

- **Legal Consequences**: Engaging in page hijacking can have serious legal repercussions. Perpetrators can face charges related to copyright infringement, fraud, identity theft, and violations of cybersecurity laws.

- **Security Measures**: Website owners can implement security measures like regularly updating and patching their software, using firewalls, employing HTTPS, and monitoring their site's traffic for suspicious activities to mitigate the risk of page hijacking.

Page hijacking is a technical form of redirecting Web traffic that exploits certain glitches in search engines. Page hijacking involves creating a site that roughly duplicates the content of an existing site, then games search engine ranking systems to make sure that the second, duplicated site gets more recognition than the original. The goal in page hijacking is to make the second page more prominent than the first.

Pagejacking is stealing the contents of a Web site by copying some of its pages. After this it invites the people to the illegal site by wrong way.  Sometimes this is done with an outbound-link back to the original content, sometimes it is more blatant and sometimes it is even an error. Page hijacking is a malicious tactic where a hаcker creates a fake version of a popular website, duping search engines into indexing the rogue site, which then redirects unsuspecting users to unrelated or malicious websites. This can lead to a loss of credibility and revenue for the original website.
