a mirror site is an exact copy of another Internet site. Mirror sites are most commonly used to provide multiple sources of the same information, and are of particular value as a way of providing reliable access to large downloads. Mirroring is a type of file synchronization.

the definitions so far seem pretty good.  mirror sites don't really come into play for seo, other than making sure you handle the duplicate content correctly, it's really just for performance issues when users download data

A Web site that is a replica of an already existing site, used to reduce network traffic (hits on a server) or improve the availability of the original site. Mirror sites are useful when the original site generates too much traffic for a single server to support.
Mirror sites also increase the speed with which files or Web sites can be accessed: users can download files more quickly from a server that is geographically closer to them. For example, if a busy New York-based Web site sets up a mirror site in England, users in Europe can access the mirror site faster than the original site in New York.
Sites such as Netscape that offer copies or updates of popular software often set up mirror sites to handle the large demand that a single site may not be able to handle.

This is a site that is a copy of a dynamic web site or a group of web pages from a dynamic site that is saved as static HTML files. It actually mirrors or acts as a duplicate site. A mirror site is an exact duplicate of another site. From an SEO point of view, having mirrored sites can trip duplicate content filters from the search engines. As a result the search engines may impose a penalty on one or all of the sites that participate in the mirror process. Search engines also can removes these types of sites from their index.

Duplicate site that contains the same information as the principal site it mirrors. Mirror sites provide greater safety as well as more widespread access to the data, distribute the processing-load over available resources, and speed up transmission by being nearer to the users.

Hi,
I don't have much knowledge on mirror site. Can anyone clear my doubt?
How it will be useful when original site generates much traffic?
How search engine will crawl and index both original as well as mirror site with the same content?Whether search engine treats this as a spam or not?

A mirror site is an exact replica of the original site and is usually updated frequently to ensure that it reflects the content of the original site. Mirror sites are used to make access faster when the original site may be geographically distant.
