My question has to do with www version vs. non – www version. Recently, I have been added to a ton of listing directories all linking to the www version. I don't want to split backlinks between these two sites and would prefer to build on the non-www version PR. Should I do a 301 redirect from the www version to the non-www version? Will the backlinks from those directories still count towards my non – www version?

The only difference between a www and non-www site URL is only a technical one. When your website contains "www.", it is the hostname which adjusts to DNS and restricts cookies while utilizing other domains.

From an SEO perspective it doesn't make a difference whether you use WWW or not in front of your domain name. What's important is that you have a preferred version and redirect all others to that one.

You can choose any one version of the website i.e www or non-www. There is no any issue in SEO. But keep in mind that all the versions of urls should be redirected to only one. Below are the example suppose you have a website www.example.com. Below are the versions of your urls:

http://www.example.com
http://example.com
https://www.example.com
https://example.com

You can choose any one version for your website. But all the remaining three urls should be redirected to the version you choose

Using a 301 redirect on the "non-www" version of the URL, which is essentially a "permanent" redirect in server talk, you can effectively consolidate all of your link popularity to a single URL. This consolidation will serve to increase your website's chances of obtaining and maintaining top rankings.
