We have 2 websites for our business (Health Related) (Hospital)
Website1  - www.oldxyz.com (exampledomain)
Website2 -  www.newxyz.com (exampledomain)

(www.oldxyz.com) this domain running from many years simple website not optimized for seo. but last
year we create a new website (www.newxyz.com) optimized with seo and seo is ongoing on this new
website.

Few Weeks ago we redirect (301) this domain (www.oldxyz.com) to our new domain
(www.newxyz.com) but the ranking of new domain (www.newxyz.com) is going down day by day.
whereas old domain (www.oldxyz.com) is started to rank for many keywords....

Just fyi
- we only redirect (301) homepage of this domain (www.oldxyz.com) to this domain
(www.newxyz.com) .. not all the landing page (urls)

- (www.oldxyz.com) this domain http and new domain  (www.newxyz.com) with https

- ssl installed few months ago on (www.newxyz.com)

- we don't use old website (www.oldxyz.com)

Now my queries are:
- the reason for drop in ranking for new domain (www.newxyz.com) (domain with https, seo
optimized and on going seo)
- shall I block the old domain  (www.oldxyz.com)  in google with robots to recover ranking on new domain.

please suggest the best way to tackle this scenario ./...

check (dot).ht access file in server and check is it properly redirected

A drop after switching is common. There is I believe a filter you go through when you 301 links to https, not all of the links make it through and this causes a drop in rankings.

How could the old website is ranking though it got redirected and this new one had a drop in ranking? it will be helpful to me if you clear this doubt

Keep an eye on the 301 redirects and wait for your listings to recover. Yes it is common. We get questions about it here all the time: Huge drop (50%) in traffic after HTTPS move.

301's are very unpredictable. I've done a dozen or more with no issues, but there have been cases where I 301'd pages and whole sites to a new domain and the rankings would not come back.
