I use Alexa rank for approximate calculation of popularity and traffic. I never used it as a very accurate tool for assessing improvement of website popularity. But it does help a bit. Like Similarweb.

From my experience I learnt that Alexa uses some of these points to calculate their rank.

Traffic received by the website.
Quality and amount of contents.
Bounce rate and CTR ( Connected to point 1 )
Avg. daily visitors and Time spend on a website, including page views.
Internal links and Backlinks to the websites. Especially from sites related to your blog/ site niche.
Mistakes from Alexa team. Yup it is not perfect.
Addition of Alexa widget & usage of their toolbar.
Multiple url request from the same user ?..( possible ranking factor )
Monitored traffic sources and un-monitored sources. ( might make difference )
