Google Indexing Data Ambiguous

Hello members.
I own a Website.
In Google webmasters tools when I go to Google Index>>Index status, there it shows 162 indexed pages,
while in the same breath, when I go into Crawl>>Sitemaps, here it shows 10827 submitted 1709 indexed.
First figure (10827) is true because I have submitted them through sitemap.
But what about number of indexed pages?
Should I believe on 1709 or 162?
It is also seen that, when I search by Google search-term - "site:mydomain.com", the number of results shown is 174.
So please help me.
