Forum posting is indeed a common way to obtain inbound links, also referred to as backlinks, to a site, which can help to enhance search engine ranking. However, as SEO (Search Engine Optimization) has evolved over time, mere link building is not sufficient. The context of the link, its relevancy, and whether it provides value for users are additional factors that need to be considered.

Both simple links and signatures can have their role in link building, but each has its pros and cons:

Forum Signatures: Typically, these links are placed in every post a user makes on a forum. While this might seem like an excellent way to generate many backlinks, it can sometimes backfire. Google and other search engines are aware of this method and usually give these types of links low value, considering them as 'sitewide' links. Also, if your main method of acquiring backlinks is via forum signatures, this could trigger some search engines to rank your site lower due to a lack of link diversity.

Simple Links: These are typically found within the content of a forum post. If your post is of high quality and relevance to the linked website, this can be a very effective method of generating quality backlinks. Search engines like Google give more value to links that are within a body of content that is relevant to the linked website.

That being said, the key to successful link building today is to focus on providing quality and valuable content that users will naturally want to link to, rather than simply focusing on acquiring as many backlinks as possible. You should emphasize building relationships and providing value, rather than just dropping links wherever you can.

Make sure to respect forum guidelines, as many forums do not appreciate or allow blatant self-promotion or spammy posting. A heavy-handed approach can lead to your posts being deleted or, worse, your account being banned. You need to contribute to the conversation in a meaningful way, and if it's relevant, share your link.

As we move further into the age of semantic search and user-centred SEO, always remember that user value and content relevancy are key.

Let's expand on this further!

When it comes to either signature links or simple links in forum posts, it's important to consider the relevance and value of your contribution to the conversation. Just adding a link without adding any context or substance can be seen as spam and will very likely be ignored or removed.

Here are some more advanced tips for forum link building:

1. Find the Right Forums: Not all forums are created equal in the eyes of search engines. You'll want to focus your efforts on high-authority forums that are also relevant to your site's content. Forums with a lot of active users, consistent posting, and oversight from moderators tend to be higher quality in the eyes of search engines.

2. Be an Active Participant: Just dropping your links won't work. You need to be involved in the discussion, contribute valuable insights, and build your reputation within the community. Once other forum users see you as a trusted figure, they will likely be more open to checking out your links.

3. Optimize Your Profile: Many forums allow you to create a detailed profile. This is an excellent place to add backlinks. You can usually incorporate your website, social media, and other important links. This not only aids in direct SEO ranking but also allows users to engage with you on other platforms.

4. Diversify Your Link Text: Using the same link text for every post, could look spammy to search engines and could potentially harm your rankings. It's recommended to diversify your anchor text and make it suit the context it is in.

5. Monitor Your Links: Keep track of the forums and threads you've posted. In this way, you can actively reply to responses and maintain the credibility of your account. Some forums might also delete or edit your links. So, monitoring can help you in maintaining these links.

6. Use DoFollow Forums: Try to take part in forums that provide "DoFollow" links rather than "NoFollow" ones. However, you don't want to ignore "NoFollow" forums completely because a good link profile has a balance of both.

7. Long-Term Engagement: Treat your involvement within these forums as a long-term engagement. Rather than thinking you'll drop a certain number of links and move on, settling in for the long haul can lead to better relationships and more credibility within the community.

8. Proper Forum Selection: If the forum isn't related to your niche, it is likely that the traffic will not be beneficial, even if you manage to drive it. Unrelated traffic usually results in a high bounce rate which can negatively influence your site's SEO.

9. Create High-Quality Posts: Not all posts are created equal. A post that is created with attention to detail, researched content, and useful information will do a lot better than a poorly created one. Ensure that your posts are adding value and are high quality.

10. Interaction and Engagement: Engage with comments, upvote useful content, and interact frequently. This will increase your credibility and makes it less likely that your links are seen as spam.

Hi,
I would go with a link. Why? A signature is just a signature, it doesn't mean much for Google, unless it's sorrounded by the meaningful text, on the forum that is on topic of your website. But still - the simple link might seem more useful for Google and this way more useful for the user.
Cheers,
Adam

Relative and natural signature links are always helpful in increasing website traffic. These links are very productive to give high visibility to a website in organic searches

Signature matters the most as it helps to redirect traffic to your website from every post you have on the forum. This increases the traffic on your website from various forum sites.
