url structure for e-commerce website
« on: 12-17-2017, 06:52:52 »
Hello everyone, I have a query regarding the URL structure optimisation. What is the best URL structure for an e-commerce website? For example, if I want it done for an e-commerce website related to jewelry, what should be the best way to decide the URL? (I am taking abc.com as an example to demonstrate my query)
  • abc.com/keyword/category/sub-category
  • abc.com/sub-category

and for products:
  • abc.com/category/sub-category/product
  • abc.com/category/product
  • abc.com/products/product-name

Please assist me to select an optimised URL structure.
Thanks in advance.

For products detail page :
  • abc.com/category/sub-category/product
  • abc.com/category/product

You can use anyone from the above for your products detail page.

Google prefers direct URLs and most of the websites do it like example.com/product-name, but if you wan't to have a deeper research about your issue which is eCommerce related then do a research by going to top ranked pages of your competition and see which structure they are using to get more exposure.

Use hyphens to separate words. Do not use underscores, spaces, or any other characters to separate words.
Don’t over-use hyphens. Too many hypens can be seen as spammy.
URLs with too many characters (2,000) will cause your pages not to load.
Avoid the use of parameters, if possible. If parameters need to be used, they should be limited to two or less.

Url structure for ecommerce is very important and should be clear such that people get clear idea about product; just like

www.k.com/flowers/rose/pink-rose/lovelypink.php. It is east for crawlers too.

For example, let’s say you're shopping for a new sweater. If you see these two listings, which would you be more compelled to click on?

https://www.domain.com/best-sweater-ever  OR  http://lskjdoe43.domain.com/lkj/i?JEPL=u#wix23947qw

Here is an example of how your keywords can be integrated into your URL : https://www.domain.com/sweaters/red-sweater-silver-jewels

Long story short, you want people who visit your website to be able to easily find what it is they’re looking for. And because Google factors in how pleasurable it is for users to actually use a website, not only does good site structure help when someone is on your site, it helps get your site discovered because Google is more inclined to show a website that’s a pleasure to use than a website that is an absolute organizational mess.
