I think the best seo is the best user experience, so the image size of your site should keep the whole visiual effect and user friendly.

- Use alt tag to describe about the image.
- Name the image properly.
- Use related descriptive content around the image.
- Its better to use the compressed images than to reduce the height and width of the it. So that it helps to improve the website loading time.

Yes images Optimization is good , and if we Look at the Social Media optimization (SMO) Activities then we can find that Image Sharing is one Part of SMO, and Now a Days it is very important Part for Site Promotion.
And i would Like to Add one more thing that Google can not crawl Only Image, Google can crawl Text that is why Image with Text is Necessary when You are Sharing Image for SEO Purpose.

The Importance of image optimization in SEO can’t be undermined. It makes a dreary looking content interactive and wonderful and if you are a webmaster then you can’t afford to ignore the image optimization as the results can be devastating.

Content is without doubt the most important part of a website, but the quality of the images on your website can make the difference as to whether your visitors stay long enough to read your content. To make the images look as good as possible, it is necessary to optimize your images before uploading them to your website.
