Link rot, also known as link decay or link breaking, refers to the process by which hyperlinks on individual websites or the internet as a whole become unavailable, broken or outdated over time.

There are a few main reasons why link rot occurs:

1. Website or page removal: When a website is taken down or an individual webpage is removed, any links pointing to that content will break.

2. URL changes: If a website restructures its URLs or renames files/folders, the old links will no longer work properly.

3. Domain expiration: When a domain registration expires and is not renewed, the associated website becomes inaccessible.

4. Link typos: Simple misspellings or typos in links can cause them to break over time.

5. Content archiving: Some sites intentionally remove old content for policy or storage reasons, breaking inbound links.

Link rot is a persistent problem on the internet. As websites are updated, reorganized or taken down, their internal and external links deteriorate. This creates broken links that lead to error pages for users. It's an issue for websites trying to maintain link integrity as well as search engines trying to crawl and index the internet accurately.
