For me, it is very important because I am following home based business named PTR (Paid to Review). In PTR business, we have to have website/blog that has high google PR and Alexa rank, because the higher our website/blog ranked in google and alexa, the more advertisers willing to buy review from us. No it's not value anything in the way to boost the traffic. It only show the estimated traffic of your site as compare to others on web. It is only rough idea in term of traffic. But some disagree with this rough traffic estimate.

If you have good Alexa rank then its a sign of popularity that your website has gained. Facebook comes after Google and it has Alexa Rank 2.
