Google prefers CSS primarily because it permits smaller file sizes, user's superior page structure/layout control and option to hide some content from browsers but still get selected by Google

in the past websites were built on tables so google searched column for column. So nowadays if your website is still built on a table you have to watch out because google will put focus on the first column which is the navigation on the left side. So it's better to use css to put the focus on your contant
