Google does not put much ranking weight directly on the keywords that are in the URL right now. Any effects on SEO with or without them are caused indirectly through user interaction and usability.
Keywords in URLs can increase the clickthrough rate (CTR) from the SERPs. Check out these search results for "Stack Exchange" in Google. The first uses keywords in the URL and gets an extra instance of the keywords bolded in the listing.

Having keywords in the URL is one the best ideas in SEO to get results.
The search engine scans the URL and if it finds the popular keyword then it refers to the said URL in the results of the search query.
Though having the keyword in your URL, it considered a good practice to have it in the title as well.
Remember, avoid keyword stuffing, i.e having too many keywords in the URL or in the title.

It won't catapult you to page‑one overnight. Search bots skim the URL as a minor signal among hundreds of on‑page factors - title, H1, schema, backlink profile.
