help with notification system

hi,

i have some kind of notification system , all is working exept updating when read
i have my notifications in a hidden div that appears clicking a link.
what i want to achieve is maybe via some javascript function or jquery , that when i open the div it updates all the notifications to read without refreshing the page

any ideas on which function to use etc?
