Doubt on Link building methods

Hey there,

I have a doubt about building the link... My senior always asked me to check each backlink with "Site:www.example.com" If the respective site home page is indexed on the first page. Then only do we have to start to participate on that particular site, if not we should avoid that site and check for another.

Why we should check it... I usually used to check DA and SP before building in any backlinks.

They said "if we participate on the site which home page is not indexed in the google first page, then it will lead to SP or our home page will get disappear in the search... Is it true? Plz help me with it .... I'm new to this field.
