Why Do Website Owners Still Rely on Comment Backlinks?

Comment backlinks have long been seen as a shady SEO tactic, and Google treats them as a low-value link-building method designed to manipulate search rankings.

Since the Penguin update, Google's algorithms largely ignore links from blog comments because they're so easy to spam. In most cases, these links carry little to no SEO value.

SEO experts often warn that relying on this tactic—especially when using exact-match anchor text—can make a website appear low-quality, spammy, or manipulative to Google. This increases the risk of getting flagged or even penalized by search algorithms.

On top of that, most comment sections automatically include a "nofollow" tag, which means these links don't pass PageRank or SEO authority.

Yet, despite knowing all this, many website owners still use blog commenting as one of their first steps in building a backlink profile.

Maybe it's because comment backlinks are easy to create and seem like a simple way to boost early authority and gain some initial visibility — even though this method has become outdated. Many web developers and site owners still believe that "every link counts," whether it's dofollow or nofollow.

So, what do you think?

Does comment backlinks still hold any weight in today's SEO trends?

Website owners still rely on comment backlinks because they help improve visibility, drive referral traffic, build relationships, and strengthen domain authority when used strategically on relevant, high-quality websites.
