Removing Gravatars

Hi there

I have a wordpress site that has used gravatars it's whole life (started November 2014). There are a lot of comments on the site and so there are a lot of requests to gravatar, which I am now discovering is slowing down some of my really popular posts A LOT. So, I want to deal with this. The WP User Avatar plugin doesn't seem to be working for me, and I'm not sure of others. I am considering simply turning off avatars in the discussion settings. But I just wanted to check - will this have a negative SEO affect - to have all of those gravatar images disappear suddenly. I know increasing the speed of those posts will help with SEO and user experience, but I just wanted to make sure that there wouldn't be negative SEO effects for turning off those gravatars, and if I need to find another solution. Can't seem to find the answer to this questions anywhere - so I'm hoping someone here can help.
