If you are not going to add your niche related content on your website.. what else you are planning to publish on your website?
You are supposed to publish related content on your website. In fact you are supposed to linked to your related website as well.

Content affect highly on SERP. As fresh and meaningful content to topic can helpful to get high position in search , and also be helpful for high PR.  But as you write anything that not relevant to topic , then it also affect negatively on your site position in search and in rank.
