If your SEO strategy is "register, spam 500 forums, drop a URL, profit," you're already behind. Most junk forum links are ignored, deleted, or buried.

Modern link building needs relevance, editorial context, natural anchors, and genuine participation. Forums can support a diversified backlink profile, but they are not a magic ranking button.

Honest answer: forums are a weak source of backlinks these days, and the thread already hints at why. Most forums set profile and signature links to nofollow, so they pass no ranking value. Google also largely discounts forum signature links because they were abused for years.

That does not make forums useless. They are good for three things:

1. Targeted traffic. A genuinely helpful post in an active niche forum sends real visitors, and some of them link to you from their own sites -- which is how the good backlinks actually happen.

2. Relationships and opportunities. Blog owners, journalists, and potential partners hang out in forums. A thoughtful presence there leads to guest posts and mentions, which are the real link wins.

3. Learning what your audience asks. The questions people post are content ideas.

If you do participate, do it properly: answer questions genuinely, complete your profile, and do not drop links everywhere. One relevant link in context where it truly helps is fine; ten signature links are not.

For actual link building, the reliable methods are still the boring ones: create something worth linking to, do outreach to sites in your niche, guest post on real blogs, and fix broken links. No shortcut replaces that.
