Is giving shareware / free software got to do anything with ranking in SE's?
Will you get anything for sharing files / software ?

In general, all human / everyone love free things.

Agree. You can get traffic, but anyway you must have unique content, relevant backlinks and good on-site optimization.
Otherwise you will get nothing because there are so many high ranked shareware/freeware sites.
