Traffic comes from the wrong places

As an affiliate working on SEOing my site, I travel a lot and working from the place I travel in. In the last few months I've been visiting a country and working on my site. To my surprise (and my dismay I might add) I am finding out that most of my traffic comes from the country I am working in. My site is a USA based and intended for the English speaking market and the traffic from this country is no use for me. What am I doing wrong? Can this be avoided?
