Several unused domains. Un-updated content vs No website at all

I have several domains that I'd like to setup my websites on.  However I won't be able to update content for about a year or two. I'm trying to decide wether to even setup the websites now or wait until I get back so I can advertise and update content, etc.

Would it have a positive effect to have my websites running, with just static content?  (for ranking/seo/etc)

If it has no positive effect I will just wait until I have time to maintain these websites and keep them as just domains.
