Alternative To Embedding Fonts?

I want to use the Haettenschweiler font (True Type) for the text on a section of my website but I don't want to embed the font as there are compatibility problems with other browsers. Is this possible? If not then a small font that has a completely different look to the usual suspects (Tahoma, Verdana, Courier, Arial etc, etc) would be ideal but how do I go about displaying the font?
