Paying for a link in a well known directory is not a bad idea to promote your website.  There are many sites which allow you to buy links since they rank high in the google search engine.

similarly you can buy direct advertisements which give an SEO backlink as well as the direct traffic from the site.  Both work great for some traffic to get your site's ball rolling
