Hey,

I am facing problem while analyzing the direct traffic of my website. There is a vast difference in direct traffic this year when compared with the last year traffic. It has been seen that the organic and social traffic has increased while the direct traffic has reduced. It is also observed that most of traffic is lost from the hompage of the website. Can anyone help me to sort out this problem? What are the sources of direct traffic?

Direct traffic is typically defined by marketing analytics as any time a visitor manually enters your URL. But in reality, just about every marketing analytics product considers any visitor who doesn't have a referral source as direct. A common behavior that gets classified as direct is traffic from untagged social posts and untagged emails.

Analytics attaches "direct" to most of unidentified traffic. That is why you might see a big number if direct if you don't tag your campaigns outside of Adwords properly (email, other ad networks). What could have happened is that you started tracking the traffic properly - so the numbers disappeared from direct, but appeared in referrals or campaigns.

you were doing some offline advertising, like for hiring people for example which drew a lot of direct visitors - but once the ad is done the traffic goes back to where it was before

These are two of the explanation that I have seen online, take time to read it or might as well consult MOZ.

Direct traffic means the traffic from following:

   1. Clicking a link from an email (depending on email provider/program)
   2. Clicking a link from a Microsoft Office or PDF dоcument
   3. Accessing the site from a shortened URL (depending on the URL shortener)
   4. Clicking a link from a Mobile social media apps like Facebook or Twitter. Phone apps often do not pass referrer information.
   5. Going to a non-secure (http) site from a link on a secure (https) site, as the secure site won't pass a referrer to the non-secure site. For instance, if someone clicks a link on https://example.com to go to http://example2.com, the analytics for example2.com will show the session as direct.
   6. Accessing a site from organic search, in some instances, will end up being reported as Direct due to browser issues. An experiment conducted by Groupon showed as much as 60% of direct traffic may be from organic search.

The most common cause of a sudden drop in website traffic is a recent search algorithm update. Penalties, redirects, incorrect robots. txt rules and ranking losses are all other legitimate reasons why you may see a drop in website traffic
