Searchers is a web search engine that was launched to the public in February 2005. It is a locally hosted web search engine with the largest web index in the United Kingdom.[1] Searchers, previously named Searchers.com until 2008, belong with a handful of companies under the umbrella company Reach Global. Searchers began development in 2003 at the Reach Global Headquarters located in Church, Lancashire.
Objectives
The launch of Searchers to the public in 2005 aimed to provide an alternative to the US-centric internet search engines previously available. This shift in focus was made by Searchers collecting the largest web index in the UK and focusing on listing pages that have been read by UK users. The objectives of the project are to provide highly relevant search results by avoiding simple keyword matching that have typically been associated with smaller search engines.
Developments
In 2004 Yell joined with Searchers and offered Yell web links for relevant businesses. In 2005 the company worked with the shopping website Kelkoo to offer users the opportunity to search for products directly based on product name and category. Various other developments to the website have included the showcasing of Diana, an artificial intelligence interface, which offered conversational interaction to its web users.
The Searchers branding tool is ‘Cyril’, initially an internal embodiment of the Crawler, ‘Cyril’ has been developed to be shown as the ‘searching’ character that ‘crawls’ the internet for relevant information and collates the index of web pages. Searchers are currently using a fourth version of the website (dated July 2009). As Searchers have improved Cyril has been developed and became ‘3-D’ in 2006.
The website launched an advertising campaign on the UK terrestrial channel Channel 4 throughout 2006 and targeted potential web users. A follow-up advertising campaign was broadcast on Channel 4 in 2009.
Responses
In 2006, the Financial Times rated Searchers as an “industry leader”.[2]
